Edison Hydro, in many ways, is like an old amusement park for the imagination. It appeals to people who are affectionately called “River Rats”. That may not sound endearing, but it is. These folks that harness rivers are very grown up kids. We at Edison hope to encourage one of these fine people to step forward and lead the resurrection of one of the oldest “Water Wheels” in New York State, circa 1869. Currently, a Morgan Smith turbine is installed(pictured here with young Andrew Felluss present for divining scale) and actually was first placed in service in 1825.
This Hydro station was the power source for the first Juilliard loom.
As we go through the process of regulation, engineering, administering to the needs of Columbia County and with other myriad issues. It's our hope that in two years time to be in operation producing some 600 to 800 kilowatts of clean emission free electricity. Surprisingly, that many kilowatts can power about 500 homes. The Juilliard Mill’s founder later became benefactors to the music school in New York City which carry’s their name to this date. As is clear from the illustration you can see the foundation of the mill structure which was constructed over the top of the turbine. The turbine powered the looms which were housed in the building. The structure has since given into the river.
Edison Hydro Stats
Net Head: 23 feet*
Mean Cubic Feet Per Second* 196*
Indicated head reading determined via transit: 29 feet.
Flow Duration 9 Months
Peak Flow Duration: 4 Months
Calculated Horsepower: 350*
Potential generation: 270 to 320 kilowatts.
Annual potential baseload generation predicated on 300 kilowatts generating 240 days per annum: 1,728,000 KW.
Per year revenue stream based on the baseload rate of .05 cents per kWh: $86,400.
Renewable Energy Credits program is not available in New York State at this time.
When such a program is made available to small independent power producers, revenue could possibly double.
